Niche Retailing-The Jungle Jim Experience

Grocery retailers of all sizes are battling Wal-Mart Super centers everyday. Who are some of the successful retailers beating (or at least) competing with the Wal-Mart giant? One particular store comes to mind-Jungle Jim's.

Jungle Jim's is a one store operation located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Owned and operated by Jim Bonaminio, Jungle Jim's operation could be a case study about successful niche retailing. Bonaminio does it right; combining flare and food variety to bring shoppers from around the country into his "Jungle". In fact, this guy's store is so unique that Business Week recently ran a report about Jungle Jim's and how he differentiates himself from Wal-Mart (no link is available because you have to have a subscription to read the article).

I believe wholeheartedly that it is differentiation (or niche retailing) that independents must do in order to compete with Wal-Mart. I wanted to bring Jungle's operation to your attention. Visit Jungle Jim's Website to learn more about his store. If you are ever in Cincinnati, this store is a must see operation.

Please post your thoughts about Jungle Jim or any other successful independent retailers.

Welcome to GroceryBiz

I am a grocery industry veteran/professional who is looking for other grocery veteran/professionals to share thoughts and information about our industry. These thoughts and information can be anything- from the way Wal-Mart is impacting the grocery business to finding an old pal you worked with years ago.

INFORMATION- isn't that what a blog is all about? Please post Web links to interesting business stories regarding anything about the grocery biz! One of my favorite Web news stories is PBS's "Is Wal-Mart Good for America?" series which can be found at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/walmart/secrets/ An in-depth look at Wal-Mart's impact on businesses is examined. A must see that can be watched on-line.

As a grocery professional-whether your on the retail, wholesale, procurement, or operations side of the business- it should be considered a duty to be informed of current grocery events or trends. COMPETITION- Whether it's your personal career or your nearest competitor, grocery biz information will keep you informed and on the competing edge.

Share your knowledge and learn something at the same time. This will be an informative and fun blog! By the way, if anyone knows a gentleman by the name of Don Mason, tell him about this blog and let him know an old grocery colleague is looking for him. Don worked for Jewel Foods in Illinois and Iowa. I lost track of him in 1996.

I hope you post and I look forward to your information about the grocery industry!
